"Likened to Tāne who retrieved the three baskets of knowledge: through the Arts and Leisure Arts the attainment of all knowledge is achieved by bringing greater understanding of our indigeneity from across the world..."
The goal of this project is to record the cultural preparations and protocols in use in the performing arts of Aotearoa. Focusing on a Māori world view and the tikanga of Pacific, African and Asian practitioners, this resource includes performers, designers, backstage and permanent staff. Commissioned by Playmarket, alongside a printed booklet written by Nathan Hoturoa Gray, this site aims to highlight the key protocols for welcomes, blessings, farewell ceremonies and associated activities. It includes specific cultural practices that have evolved through all stages of theatre production from development to rehearsals and final presentation of the work. Recognising that cultural practices are fluid, ever-changing and variable for reasons of experience, territory and background, this webpage serves as a 'living document' to allow for ongoing discussion and input for many voices and individual practice to be shared.
